I love riding habits. Even in fashion eras I don’t particularly like (I’m looking at you 1860s), I can usually find a habit I would want to wear. Something about the clean, tailored lines really appeals to me, plus collars and lapels are one of my favorite things to drape and sew. One of my most recent projects was a mid-1790s habit, something I’ve wanted to make for years. I have a lot to share about the construction of this outfit, so I’m going to break it down into multiple posts, starting with the inspiration and finished look.

I wrote this quite a while ago but never got around to posting it. However, since it’s a new year and I’m working on some new projects, I felt it would be a good thing to remind myself of some important lessons and share what I learned. Also, I’m not purporting to be an expert in extant garments. These are just my broad observations, formed over a brief period of study. I took thousands of photos on my trip, not all of which I can share, but I wanted to include a few in this post. A 1790s Alteration Project

I’m no stranger to altering my costumes. Often after a first wearing there are fitting tweaks I want to make, but I’ve also retrimmed gowns, or completely remade them in the past, or even cut up old dresses to reuse the fabric for an entirely different project. However, with this project I tried something I’ve been thinking about for years. I updated an existing 18^th century gown to reflect the new fashionable 1790s silhouette, copying specific alterations I’ve seen on extant gowns. In this case, I took my mid-1780s blue stripe gown which no longer fit, and altered it to a 1790–4 shape.

When you think of 18^th century neckline-fillers, you immediately think of a fichu or kerchief, right? A plain or ruffled triangle, worn tucked in or left out over the bodice. I’m oversimplifying, obviously, but really it’s easy to not go beyond a simple style. However, once you start looking for it in portraits and paintings, the variety of quirky and interesting things they were wearing at the neckline is surprising!

No, that’s not a typo, this project really was that awful. Ever have a project where you love the fabric so much, and are just so excited to work with it, but then it all just goes to hell? Yeah… I won’t recount every painful detail of how this dress fought me, but there were three different bodice iterations, I redid every seam multiple times, and I still ended up with something I’m not thrilled with. Silk satin is beautiful and gorgeous and evil. But enough whining, on to construction!

This year has been a series of nightmare projects. I’ve been constantly ripping out stitches and redoing patterns in the hope of making something I am satisfied with. It has felt like everything I’ve tried to sew has fought me. With the exception of this project, that is. Granted I’ve made this style of dress numerous times now, but at this point I’m claiming the victory.

My first completed project of 2018 is a cream satin late 1780s/early 1790s faux fur-trimmed mantle and matching muff. You’d think by now I’d have enough 18^th century capes and cloaks, but there is so much variety in the accessories of the last quarter of the century, and I want to make them all!

2017 Sewing Year Review

Time for the annual year-end review. This was a bit of a lean year in terms of sewing and creativity for me, but I’m very proud of everything I made. My goal over the past year, like previous years, has been to focus on quality not quantity, and I feel that it showed in my work. That’s not to say that everything I made it perfect, but I actively tried to grow my skills and choose to redo things until I was happy with the result. Nothing like practice to keep you sharp.

A Holiday Trip to Williamsburg

I’ve always wanted to visit Colonial Williamsburg in December. All the lovely holiday decorations around town look so festive and cheerful – a perfect antidote to winter blahs. Serendipitously, a group of us all had thoughts to visit this winter and we were able to spend a long weekend together relaxing, eating, and enjoying the sights.

This jacket started its life in the Burnley & Trowbridge workshop I attended last year. Like I mentioned in my previous post, I had a hard time conceptualizing the design for my jacket on the fly, and while I liked the finished jacket, I didn’t love it. It didn’t match the image in by brain, even if I couldn’t quite articulate what that image was. So I let it sit half-finished for a couple of months before I attempted to rework the jacket using the existing base. I managed to get something a little closer to the picture in my mind; still it wasn’t quite right. Back to the UFO pile, where it marinated for a good 6 months before I was ready to tackle it again.

In my everyday life, I rarely wear any makeup. To be honest, I’ve always found more than a swipe of mascara and some tinted lip balm to be intimidating. Still, over the years I’ve learned to use modern cosmetics to recreate a historic look, and overall, I’ve been pleased with my efforts. However, I’ve been curious about historic cosmetics and hair products for a long time, and decided to try a few from LBCC Historical to see how they work for me.

Early last November, I made the seven-hour trek down to Williamsburg to attend my first Burnley and Trowbridge workshop, “A Fitting Jacket”. I’d been interested in them for years, but never worked up the courage to attend. Either the timing didn’t work for me, or I was too intimidated to sign up. Of course, I shouldn’t have worried. It was challenging in some ways but in the end, it was a wonderful experience.

When I decided to take my first Burnley and Trowbridge workshop last year, I knew I wanted a new pair of stays. M my older stays didn’t fit my body as nicely as before, and I knew I would need something more comfortable to wear during the three days of fittings. Also, I wanted to experiment with a later style of stay. Inspired by several extant examples of pale pink and beige stays from this period, I decided to make a mid to late 1780s pair with front lacing and wide curved front piece using some lovely linen from my stash.

When I was trying to decide what to wear to Colonial Williamsburg last fall, I couldn’t get the idea of a riding habit out of my head. I’ve always envisioned wearing a habit surrounded by gorgeous fall foliage, and I figured this was the perfect opportunity. My blue-green habit no longer fits very well, so I decided to pick up my long-abandoned pink and grey habit project. I already had the shirt from my first habit, the grey wool petticoat and pink silk waistcoat assembled, and a pattern for the jacket started. Of course, once I tried everything on again, I quickly realized the pattern I made three years ago would not work and the waistcoat needed completely remade. So much for a quick project! Thankfully, I loved the way my aqua striped waistcoat looked with the grey wool, so I could focus patterning and constructing a new jacket to go with them.

For me, a trip to Williamsburg isn’t complete without spending at least one day exploring the historic district in 18^th century costume. I have so few opportunities to wear the costumes I make in such a perfect setting, that it feels like a waste not to take advantage of the opportunity. So, when I traveled down for the Burnley and Trowbridge jacket workshop last November, I planned in an extra day just to play dress up in town.

Several years ago, I saw a portrait by George Romney at The Huntington Library and Gardens, and I immediately knew I had to reproduce it one day. The sitter, Susannah (Miller) Lee Acton, is wearing a cream redingote with wide lapels and huge capes. She has a large gauzy cap and fichu, and her waist is accentuated by an aqua silk sash that matches the ribbons decorating her cap. How could I not instantly fall in love?

Another Costume College has come and gone! This year marked my 9^th CoCo, but my 10 year anniversary! It’s hard to believe that I once had the courage to fly across the country by myself to meet up with a bunch of strangers, but I did, and that first trip (and subsequent trips) introduced me to some of my closest friends. It’s funny to think how much Costume College has changed in the past ten years. Its grown significantly, with so many people and amazing costumes both during the day and at the official evening events, that it can be very overwhelming to a quiet, shy person like myself, even after all these years.

My latest white 1790s dress (worn to a ball in Bath and at the 2016 Jane Austen Festival) was a bit of an experiment. I had been planning to make a new late 1790s white dress for some time. I wanted a gathered front for adjustability, but I didn’t want to do the exact same construction as my green sarcenet gown. You see so many different ways of constructing front gathered gowns in this transitional period, and I wanted to explore more with this style.

When I was planning what to make for my trip to Bath, an all-weather spencer topped the list. The only spencer I had was my blue spotted silk, which as lovely as it is, isn’t good to wear in the heat or in the rain. Yes, I realize my trip was in June, but I run cold and England’s idea of summer is not mine. I froze on both my previous trips and was determined not to do so again!

Last January I spotted a portrait on Pinterest and immediately knew I had to recreate it. I had the perfect fabric and matching tassels in the stash, and the pattern was a simple modification of the pattern I had already made for my teal wool spencer. When I spotted a similar spencer in an 1801-1802 Costumes Parisiens fashion plate, I knew I had to make it for my Bath wardrobe.

This past summer, I was lucky enough to spend two weeks visiting England and Scotland with my good friends Katherine and Megan. It was my first time traveling abroad with other history lovers and costumers, and we packed a lot of fun stuff into the trip, including a week-long stay in Bath. I had visited Bath once before with my husband in 2012 but it was only a small part of the trip (less than 24 hours) and ever since, I’ve dreamed of coming back for a longer stay and in costume. It’s just too perfect! Now that I’ve managed to achieve that goal, I’m hooked and can’t wait to return. Jane Austen Festival I’m looking at you! 2015 Sewing Year End Review

Happy 2016 everyone! I do realize the last day of January is rather late to post a year end reivew, but since I haven't actually made a blog post since August, I'm not doing too bad. It felt like I barely sewed anything this past year, but looking at it all written out, I was actually decently productive considering how much my arm has bothered me. I've spent the last couple of months with a new round of doctor visits, tests, and physical therapy, and I finally have a concrete diagnosis for my arm issues - cubitial and carpal tunnel in my right arm. Woo! It's nothing I haven't suspected for a long time, but having positive test results has helped the doctor and therapist formulate a better treatment plan. No scarey surgery for me yet, thank goodness, but I do have to be very careful how I treat my arm. But enough of that. On to sewing!

Ever get a wild hair and decide you need a new outfit in the week before an event? Of course not, because you are sensible costumers, unlike me. With only 5 days to go, I decided make a Lost Hope dress in time for Costume College. I'm a huge fan of the novel Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell (and very pleased with the TV series too), I had the perfect fabric in the stash, and I just couldn't miss the opportunity to make something from one my favorite stories and join in on the group fun.

In my day to day life I wear dresses almost exclusively. They are easy to wear and make one look put-together with minimal effort, because while I enjoy nice clothes, I am lazy and don’t want to have to think beyond “what color cardigan will go with this dress?” Sometimes I buy my dresses, sometimes I make them, but whenever I find a style I find particularly I end up with multiples of the same dress, in different colors or fabrics. Again, I’m a lazy dresser. Why only have one dress that makes you feel confident when you can have one for every day of the week? My wardrobe may be predictable but I love to wear everything in it.

Learning Curves

One of the things I love, and admittedly hate too, about costuming is the fact that every project is different. I may have made things from the era before, but each project presents its own unique challenges, frustrations, and opportunities to learn. One of my current project is the perfect example. I’m working on a mid-1790s evening gown with a gathered front and high, narrow back. My love for 1780s and 1790s gathered front transitional gowns is pretty obvious when you look at my project history, but despite the fact that I’ve made five similar gowns, this project has been an interesting experiment.

I’ve been scheming about my travel and costume plans lately, and 2015 looks like it’s going to be a good year. I don’t have too many costume trips planned this year, but I’ve got some other fun travel to look forward to. My husband and I will be taking a Caribbean vacation this spring for our anniversary and then I (hopefully!) have a trip to England in the works for August.

I have a weakness for historical accessories. From jewelry to reticules, they are often my favorite part of an outfit. One accessory I’ve long wanted to make is an embroidered letter case or wallet. What could be more perfect for carrying things like money or hotel keys at an event? No more loosing things at the bottom of my pocket or purse!

Progress on my new 1780s Italian nightgown has been steady but slow. We are in the middle of remodeling our kitchen, plus I decided to hand sew the entire thing, meaning I have very little to show for the past month. But the dress is coming together beautifully, and I couldn’t be more pleased.

My original plan for the Costume College Ice Cream Social was to join in on the Game of Thrones fun. I had a Margaery Tyrell inspired costume planned and even started when I ran into trouble. My perfectly fitted pattern didn’t translate into a perfectly fitted bodice, and while the costume isn’t a total loss, it needs work. More work and mental energy than I had time for with a deadline looming.

Important note: I can't claim 100% accuracy with the construction of this dress. I havent done enough in-depth research to definitively say how this style would have been constructed. Since it is a transitional style, I felt comfortable enough to use my knowledge of 18th century techniques to experiment with the construction and make educated guesses as to what they might have done.

If you've been following my instragram account, you may have noticed that my new print dress is nearly finished. It just needs sleeves and accessories and its ready to wear at Costume College. It turned out differently that I originally planned, but thats the price of experimenting. I miscalculated and the waist ended up sitting at my natural waist, not raised like I planned. Also, the fabric is really too heavy for this style of dress, but I've already invested enough time into the dress that I will make it work. With the right accessories, I can easily transition this dress into a slightly earlier look.

Not much sewing has been going on around here lately. I’ve been busy with my garden and yard work (that time of year), as well as finally stripping some hideous wallpaper in my house. I also pushed myself too hard prepping for the Francaise Dinner and Williamsburg and have had to take a break from sewing to let my arm heal. But Costume College is just around the corner, and if I want something new to wear I’m going to have to get cracking!

I’m back from an exciting and hectic trip to PA for the 3^rd annual Francaise Dinner. Between flight delays, long drives, and inclement weather, the trip ended up being more stressful than I had planned, but I still had a wonderful time with friends and it was great to see everyone dressed in their best finery!

As a great portion of the United States can attest, it’s been quite cold the past few days. Where I live it didn’t get nearly as cold as other parts of the country, but -2 is not a number we see very often and I’ve been trying to stay warm by wearing as many layers as possible. I’m naturally cold all the time, and my thin blood can’t handle much below freezing. I often wonder how I would have survived in the days before central heating and electricity. Honestly, I'm doubtful.

2013 Year End Review

2013 was in interesting year. I wasn't nearly as productive as I was in 2012, but despite a sewing slump at the end of the year, I'm really proud of everything I made this year. I feel that my skills are continuing to improve and my goal for 2014 is to focus on quality rather than quantity. At the moment I only have two events planned for the coming year, so I want to take this opportunity to slow down, to concentrate on making each outfit to the best of my ability and avoid rushing through the project just to get to the next.

One of my favorite parts of historical costuming is learning about the wider social history of a time period, exploring the who and why behind the clothing I'm recreating to get a better sense of its meaning, conscious or unconscious, to the wearer. Admittedly, I focus on the glittery world of the aristocracy and upper classes when recreating and researching my costumes. I make no excuses. I like shiny things.

The riding habit waistcoat is nearly complete! I've added the satin facing and finished all the handwork but I still can't decide what type of buttons I want. Deathshead buttons would be really neat but at heart I'm really a lazy seamstress and I'm not sure if I want to expend the energy making enough buttons for both the waistcoat and jacket. I think a practice button or two is needed before I decide.

When I was preping for Costume College, I came to the realization that there was no way my riding habit hat would fit in my suitcase. I certainly didn't want to crush it and wearing it on the plane really isnt something I'm willing to do (for many reasons), so I ~~stole~~ was inspired by Jen Thompson's idea of making one of those fluffy cap/turban things you see so often in the late 18th century to wear with my habit. I went for a simple, undecorated look like these two portraits:

Continuing with my brief Costume College recap, Saturday started with another fun class taught by Janea Whitacer – Making Friends with Your Thimble. I had attempted to take Janea’s classes for several years but never managed to get in. This year I was super lucky and got both! The thimble class was really informative. Not only did we learn the proper way to sew with a thimble (being self-taught, I had never figured this out), but we also went over the most efficient ways to sew, as well as learned some 18^th century stitches and seam techniques.

Before I had even finished my new 1790s dress, I knew I had to make a little sleeveless spencer or over bodice to go with it. I've been wanting one (or several) for ages and this dress seemed like the perfect thing to wear under it. I had some blue silk velvet in the stash and using the pattern from my dress, I had a new accessory in a little over a day!

I finally got to start my new 1790s dress and this is all I have to show for a week’s worth of work. It’s not that I haven’t been spending days working in the sewing room. No, my first attempt at the cross bodice was a complete and utter failure. It’s my own fault though. You would think that after nearly 10 years (!) of costuming I would learn to make a full mockup. Instead I get impatient and plunge ahead after just a few tries. It’s ok, really. At least I recognize my weakness. ;)

Another just because project, I got it into my head recently that I needed a late 1780s/early 1790s bonnet. Not a demure regency bonnet but a massive mushroom of a hat. I will admit this thing was a little overwhelming when I first put it on, but looking at my Pintrest board of inspiration images, I do think the scale is right. Sometimes it’s hard to get past our modern sense of proportion and embrace the crazy 18^th century.

Revisiting an Old Favorite

In my original wardrobe plans for Williamsburg I had intended to make several new day outfits, but time got away from me and ended up pulling out my wavy print jacket and petticoat to wear instead. I have to say I’m really glad I did! When prepping for an event, it’s easy for me to get into the mindset that everything I wear needs to be new, so I often forget how much I enjoy rewearing favorite costumes. My events are so few and so spread out that it feels almost obligatory to make something new every time, but I’m resolving this year to focus on quality over quantity and make things I truly love and am proud of the construction.

Riding Habit Sneak Peek

With less than a week until I leave for Williamsburg, I'm happy to say the bulk of my sewing is finished! The habit shirt and jacket are both wearable (though lacking buttonholes), and while the jacket is far from perfect, I'm not disappointed with my first attempts at tailoring. As you can tell, my final designed morphed from early to mid 1780s to very definitely late 1780s early 1790s. When I'm pressed for time, I dont fight the fabric, I just let it do the talking. I plan some more detailed construction posts later, but for now I have a few photos to share.

I can’t believe that we are already more than half-way through January. Where did the month go? I started the new year with not one but two colds, considerably slowing my sewing progress. However, with my next deadline looming at the beginning of February, I haven’t been idle. So far in 2013 I’ve finished a new pair of regency stays and a regency petticoat, made significant progress on my grey evening gown, and started a new 18^th century jacket. First, let’s talk stays.

Happy New Year! Now that 2013 is officially here, it's time to look back and see what I accomplished last year. 2012 was a big year for me. When we last left off, I had just scaled up and fitted the 1780 stays pattern from Corsets and Crinolines. Now, after a few minor setbacks, my stays are complete!

In a perfect world these would be hand sewn, but time constraints and physical ability can’t be ignored. I want to have these and the dresses to go over them finished in time for my Williamsburg trip in March.

Since my current obsession is all things 18^th century, it probably won’t surprise you that I’ve been trying my hand at a few new accessories. It’s been on my sewing to do list for more than five years now to make a pair of knitted garters, as well as a pair of embroidered ones, but honestly I haven’t had the time or reason to do so until now. In the past it was always more pressing for me to get a new outfit finished; unnecessary accessories were always put on the back burner. Now, I am happy to say that last month I was able to cross both types of garters off my list!

In my last post I mention some printed silk I purchased at Mood Fabrics in the NYC fabric district. Despite the hefty price tag (it is Mood after all), I fell in love and couldn’t resist getting one yard to make a blouse. I was super excited to work on the blouse once we got home from our trip, but Costume College sewing took precedence. However, the blouse was the first thing I worked on after recovering from the Costume College plague.

In case you aren’t familiar with it, Costume College is a 3 day conference focusing on all things costuming, from historical to movie to theater. During the day there are a variety of lecture and workshop classes taught by volunteers and the evenings are full of fun social events. Not only is it a great opportunity to get dressed up and see friends and fellow costumers, you also have ample opportunity to learn! Coming to L.A. from the other side of the country it’s quite an expensive trip for me, but I’ve gone five times now and it’s totally worth it!

My Absinthe Robe

Because one costume is never enough! There will be an Absinthe Afterparty following the Titanic dinner I'm attending in a little over a week, and of course, that means I need a second change of clothes. My original thought was to wear my Aesthetic dress, but as comfortable as that dress is, I wanted something even more snuggly. Most days I'm bundled up in a "old man" sweater (as my husband says), so my idea of lounge wear is distinctly warm. The perfect soulution? A silk velvet robe!

In between working on my Titanic stuff, I also made two new spring/summer dresses. Every year around this time I get the itch to make some pretty new warm weather clothes, and despite the fact that I already have a closet full of dresses in this style, I couldnt help making two more. Plus, I plan to wear these on an upcoming England/Paris trip and I cant resist making a new outfit for vacation. :)

My Titanic dinner dress is finished, but before I reveal the completed outfit, I thought I would talk a little about the construction. I got quite long-winded so I'll break it up, focusing today on the underdress . I make no assertions that my construction methods are entirely period correct, but I did use the diagrams and drawings in Patterns of Fashion and Costume In Detail as a guide.

My first project of 2012 is a new Robe a la Française made from some gorgeous rose silk taffeta. I’m attending an 18^th century dinner at the beginning of February, and while I have a perfectly good Française already, I couldn’t resist the urge to make a new one. It’s been three years since I made the aqua Française and I’ve worn it at least half a dozen times so I don’t feel that guilty.

How many polka dot dresses does one girl need? Well, if you are me, about a million! Before Christmas I started a new mid-1790s white gown. My old one is covered in brown stains, the casualty of a leak in my costume closet (but thankfully one of the few casualties), so it was time for a new one! This time I picked a spotted cotton from the stash that I had originally earmarked for a summer bustle gown. The fabric has raised dots but I choose to use the back side for a more subtle look.

I'm century hopping again! A couple of weeks ago I got the urge to make a pair of 18th century mitts. I've always wanted a pair, but have been slightly intimidated by them for some reason. However, I have a winter 18th century event coming up so it seemed like the perfect time to face my mitt fears. I want to stay warm!

So we switch from the 18th century to the 19th! I told you the CADD was running rampant around here. I was inspired to start on a new bodice for my spotty dress. I had a little over a yard left of the spotted silk and while I love the original dress, I just dont enjoy things around my neck like that. Plus, I love the idea of having multiple bodices for the same skirts. Its very economical. ;)

I've been having a hard time deciding what to work on lately. You see, I have a very bad case of CADD (Costumer's ADD). I dont have any pressing deadlines so I have to motivation to stick with one project. Its a weakness, I know. With that in mind, I started my latest finished project on a whim one day last week. I suddenly had a strong urge to make a fancy 18th century short cloak. I wanted something that would be nice for spring or fall. A quick rummage through my stash and this is what I came up with:

I have to admit that I’ve gone a bit accessory-happy with this outfit. I’ve spent way too much time and probably too much money scouring eBay for the perfect additions to my outfit. I have found some really cool stuff, both antique and modern. In fact, I have so much stuff that I’m going to have to break it up into several posts. To accessorize this outfit my rule of thumb has been “what would a naturalist carry in the field?”

It’s no secret that I have a fascination with Aesthetic art and design, among many other things. I admit I am lured by the beauty and extravagance of the movement. Happily, at the distance of 150+ years, I can look at things through rose-colored glasses; I have the luxury of romanticizing the past and imagining it is applicable to my life.

So with that fascination in mind, this spring when my husband and I took a trip to Washington, D.C. for our anniversary, I made it a point to stop by the Freer Gallery of Art to check out the installation of Whistler’s Peacock Room. And boy, it didn’t disappoint.
